I was reading Tim Challies‘ blog and came across this letter written by John Piper in response to a request for advice from a teenager.

In it he affirms the teen by sharing his own struggles of growing as an adolescent, likening it to how a frog develops.

He describes his teen years as being similar to that of a frog; awkward, messy looking, and on public display, in contrast to that of a butterfly which experiences metamorphosis in the luxury and safety of a private cocoon.

What helped him during this time of transition, he explains, were the lessons learnt from three significant men in his life – C.S. Lewis, the Apostle Paul, and his father.

Each of these, says Piper, taught him that his well-being came not from liking and being happy with himself, but from focusing his attention on every amazing thing other than himself.

He says,

Introspection must give way to amazement at glory. When it does, becoming happens. If there is any key to maturity it is that. Behold your God in Jesus Christ. Then you will make progress from tadpole to frog.

He goes on to explain how each taught him the importance of being amazed in the other, of being thankful, of not being self-absorbed, and of recognising that ‘self is simply too small to satisfy the exploding longings of the [my] heart.’

The tone of the letter suggests he’s writing to a young person familiar with church and Christianity, and I can’t help but wonder how he’d approach and make accessible a response to an unchurched young person.

In conclusion, Piper encourages the teen to come to terms with the reality that life change (sanctification) is an ongoing process to be embraced and enjoyed into eternity.

His response is thought provoking, affirming and creative, and would lose no power if it were to be called ‘A Letter to an Incomplete, Insecure You!’

Church, Newfrontiers, Together On A Mission, Twitter

After a rather uncomfortable day yesterday I’m looking forward to travelling south this morning for the Newfrontiers: Together on a Mission conference in Brighton.

Sadly, I was unable to go with the team from King’s Church yesterday as I had a stomach bug and wasn’t brave enough to take the chance – I’m sure you know what I mean!

Anyway, I’m excited about joining those already there in the corporate worship of God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and being on the receiving end of highly gifted teachers.

And by following the Twitter timeline I can see it’s gotten off to a fantastic start.

It being the last TOAM raises a mixture of emotions for many, as Adrian Warnock describes so well on his blog.

But though there’ll be a degree of apprehension about change, in faith, there can also be a real sense of anticipation and excitement as God reveals what he has in store for the future.

Unfortunately, my Angel is unable to come with me due to work commitments, so I’ve been given the task of going in order to ‘hear from God’ – not that she doesn’t hear from him herself of course!

Amongst my hearing from God I’ll no doubt get through my latest read, capture some pictures, and get time to catch up with friends like Luke.

Brighton, here I come!

Inspirational, Jesus, Random Thoughts, Worship

I awoke today conscious of the power my first thoughts would have on those that followed and in a moment made a decision about the direction of my inner conversation.

My choice was to thank the Father for his love – and for Jesus. This was followed by thanking him for my wife, at which I turned to kiss her and tell her I love her.

Resting on my pillow I then considered how being thankful helps us to be grateful, put things in perspective, and to be of good cheer.

Though I have much more to be thankful for, here was my immediate list:

Jesus

The Son of God through whom I have received the forgiveness of sins and adoption into God’s family. Ephesians 1:3-6

Mel

My wife of 15 years, closest companion, and best friend. She’s also a sexy chick! I subsequently turned to give her a kiss on the forehead and told her I loved her.

Family

Our four children who bring so much joy and energy into our lives and through whom God teaches me so much! And for my parents, sister and other extended family.

Friends

Those trusted individuals who support us, ask me awkward questions at the right time, make me laugh, and who I feel totally at ease crying with.

Health

Though I’ve not exercised for a couple of weeks, I’m generally healthy and don’t suffer from any type of long-term sickness. Other than the occasional man cold of course.

Provision

Aware that I’ve not always been the most generous of people, or the best at stewarding what God has given me, he still continues to provide for us as he always has.

Talents

Knowing that in his grace (undeserved kindness) he has given me a measure of gifting as a communicator, leader, encourager and counsellor.

All that is good is given by God as a gift to be a blessing to others.

Promises

There are so many promises God has spoken over my life through his word and those who have communicated what they believe he wanted to say to me. But the greatest of these is that nothing can separate me from his love.

Adoption

This is when I’m reminded that despite years of rejecting him, God has received me into intimate communion with open arms and a huge welcome.

He has embraced me as his own by receiving me into his family – the church – like he did the lost son.

Purpose

Apart from God I had no sense of direction, meaning or purpose. Now I know my life has significance so I aim to learn to love Life, live well and inspire others to the glory of God.

Life

Though it helps to be alive physically (it really does!), I’m thankful for knowing the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life – Jesus. It starts and ends with him, as he’s the one who makes it all possible.

Taking time to reflect on what we have to be thankful for is not only healthy, its right.
